ABOUT THE MEMBERS

Talis Errison (AS-02) — Served with Ev as Emperade (second in command to the Emperor) from 1906 E-10 through 1962 E-10. Took over as AS-02 for Star Squad after Cassius Varril died in 1923. Co-lead Delta Squadron, which later merged to create the joint unit of Star-Delta.

Mads Korrel (AS-03) — Served with Star Squad for one 5-year tour before retiring, starting in 1926 after the death of Merias Garren and ending in 1931 E-10.

  • Successfully retires.
  • Formerly a Class I Hyperion in the ASMC, and was transferred into the Vanguard after her original SMC unit was “decommissioned” for unclear reasons. Still occasionally serves on a black-ops Imperial Council-led force, and has been called off of duty with Star Squad to do special solo missions.
    • None of her squadmates know for sure what her other missions entail.
  • Fights like the devil, and carries more knives than should be reasonable.
  • Loud, dangerous, and has a host of mental health issues, but never stops trying to heal and always fights back. Struggles with short-term memory loss, likely due to the nature of her work with an IC (Imperial Council) unit.
    • Keeping herself busy or moving helps her stay collected and in-the-moment, so she’s one of the few people who will go on crazy long runs with Ev, regardless of whether they’re on-base in the capitol or in the middle of nowhere.
  • Carries an HRB and a rifle, but also has an MCW that can turn into a macuahuitl, a throwing axe, or an energy stick (electrostaff).
    • Has a gadget on one of her vambraces that generates a magitech buckler.

Lilliana Kang (AS-04) — Served with Star Squad from 1921 E-10 through 1936 E-10, joined following the death of Luka Mackee. Her addition to the squad marks the beginning of AS-04 being the traditional medic’s call-sign for the unit.

  • Successfully retires.
  • Formerly a medic in the AHDC, then the ASMC. Continues to be a volunteer member of the Ieli Emergency Medical Brigade, which is a regional support force, throughout her time with Ev’s squad.
  • Adept pilot, prefers working with munitions or fighting hand-to-hand as opposed to using blasters or blades (but she does have decent swordsmanship).
  • Never shies away from hard conversations about ethics in the IAF, or certain medical decisions, or the internal politics of the Empire. Has robust conversations on each topic with Merias, Anaka, and Ev throughout the years.
  • Only every loud and forceful when she’s doing her job; otherwise, she is fairly even-tempered and quiet. Enjoys quiet activities, and is one of few members of the squad who has a simple, normal hobby (hers is crochet).
    • Least likely to join a fight the Hackerie twins start, but will always be there to set Reina’s nose and tune up Cole’s broken horn caps when its over.

Veriah Stone (AS-05) — Served with Star Squad from 1927 E-10 through 1941 E-10. Joined following the death of Anaka Leil, and stayed with the unit until after Cole Hackerie’s execution, which led her to defect.

  • Formerly served in the AHDC as an officer, but was quickly absorbed into the Vanguard and was permanently transferred.
  • Sturdy, experienced, easily the most diplomatic out of all of her cohort of Star Squad, save for Varrin Coffee. Keeps her cool even when under severe pressure or in imminent danger, and is able to think past daunting obstacles, all of which are highly sought-after traits in the IV.
  • Good pilot, average sniper, decent gunner. Better at making runs for new positions and shielding for the others as opposed to dealing with large-scale or close-quarters combat, but is still exceptional in hand-to-hand, as is common for seasoned Vanguard soldiers. Also deadly with a pistol or knife, for similar reasons.
    • Shares Ev’s obsession with cleaning and taking apart her blasters. Learns to do it with tech-enhanced blades too, which is almost as dangerous when she leaves the parts hovering around her as she dissociates.
  • Good shadow-walker, can track and rein-in Eryn if necessary. Expert stealth operative as a result, despite (allegedly) never having had the proper training. Good with concealment charms and illusion masks.

Corrin Merrinack (AS-06, AS-09) — First joined Star Squad in 1931 E-10 and served through 1951 E-10, when he took several years off to handle issues of inheritance and politics within his family. Returned to the squad in 1954, and served until his death in 1957.

  • Was a support officer and athletic trainer for the AHDC, then a field operative (black ops, technical only), then a sniper, then a Vanguard operative.
    • Has extensive experience with high-power distance weaponry, including cannons and the internal operations of a voidship, and can hack his way into damn near anything.
    • Runs fast, kicks hard, and shoots straight.
    • Exceptionally quick-thinking, and an excellent asset in live ground combat, or as a strategist on aerial support duty. Has a robust knowledge of military history and tactics from his schooling, when he was still on good terms with his ancient-ass Imperial family. Works with Ev a lot as a result, but they often butt heads over stupid things unrelated to work.
  • Briefly uses the title of AS-06 when Cole leaves the IAF for a few years, and is kicked down to AS-09 when she returns, which he keeps until 1951. Claims AS-09 back from Viers Garren when he returns in 1957.
  • Arrogant, snippy, pedantic son of a bitch, but a damn good man despite it. Secretly likes kids (especially in the questions stage), no matter what he says outwardly, and enjoys coming from a big family. Emotionally closed off to most people, and doesn’t trust easily. Known for his strategies, his ability to minimize lives lost, and his leadership and deescalation skills.
    • Has weird beef with Talis Errison, which everyone (including both of them) is pretty certain is made up entirely for their own amusement.
    • Adores the Hackerie twins, and heard of their various exploits prior to ever meeting them personally, but thinks they’re insane.
    • Part of the reason he got kicked from the AHDC to the IV was because of his staunch refusal to follow nonsensical or illegal orders.
  • One of the only members of Star-Delta to come from a well-known, politically-connected family. The Merrinack family name has long and deep ties to the power structure of the Empire. Corrin’s misfortune of ending up in the Imperial Vanguard threw off much of his family’s internal politics, and while it provided an out for him, it also threatened his safety and life in ways that were unexpected (and ultimately led to his death, although he was ruled “KIA”).

Asmarin Flynt (AS-07) — Served with Star Squad from the time Reina Hackerie defected in 1946 E-10 until her own retirement and branch transfer in 1960 E-10.

  • Formerly a First Lieutenant in the ANIC, and retains a position in the aerial division of the 5th Battalion throughout her time in the Vanguard due to experience and skill. Primarily revisits the ANIC to do stints as a flight instructor.
    • Loves flying, and would have liked to go into piloting commercial voidcraft if her career in the military hadn’t taken a turn.
  • Transfers to one of the internal management divisions of the IAF and focuses on intelligence gathering and personnel tracking. Re-enlists in the AHDC in 2039 when the Red Armada invades, but otherwise swears off active-duty combat positions for life.
  • Strong, idealistic, loyal, and stubborn as all hell. Is well-read on the issues of politics and social inequity in the Aetherian Empire, and has experienced some of it first-hand, but dares to hope the Empire can become something better (and that it can be dissolved someday).
    • Despite her general openness about being anti-Imperial and pro-reform, she is one of few openly political members of Star-Delta who does not meet a grisly end.
    • “Loyal” primarily to her close inner circle of trusted friends. Feels the loss of Star-Delta prominently, and hones in on Ev, one of the lone survivors, in the aftermath. Rejects the Council entirely, and is not loyal to them in the slightest.
  • Excellent negotiator with adept people-reading abilities, but won’t hesitate to punch her way out of a situation if need be. Actually enjoys talking people in circles until she gets them to do or say what she wants, and can be a great manipulator when it serves her (or her squad).
  • Has several tattoos, which she will gladly talk about, and a cultural brand on one shoulder, which she never tells anyone the meaning of.
  • A decent combatant, but really excels in strategy and planning, and is an assets best utilized onboard a command ship or in a tactical space otherwise away from immediate fighting. Great analyst, and a history nerd to boot.
    • Not as formally educated as Corrin Merrinack, but finds a lot of common ground with him nonetheless; learns a lot from him (and the advanced and often illegal literature he can get his hands on, thanks to his family ties) and vice versa.

Eryn Stet (AS-08) — Served with Star Squad from the time at which she replaced Max Seiren in 1924 until her retirement in 1929.

  • Formerly an enlisted officer in the ANIC, then the ASMC, and remains an auxiliary officer on an ASMC ground invasion force that doesn’t see much combat during her time with the Vanguard.
  • Successfully retires, and goes to school on the IAF’s dollar to research gravitational anomalies and extreme atmospheric environments (key areas of study in a partly stable archipelago dimension like Aetheria centra).
    • Eventually becomes involved with the Gardens of Het’ara, and later the Alcairon and Magoni/Zitraa’lan voidspace and interdimensional environmental stabilization units.
    • While on Star Squad, she ends up getting along quite well with Aviera Lance and several of her handmaidens, and learns a lot about politics, which helps her later in her career.
  • Excellent swordsman and melee fighter in general. Throws a mean punch, carries a lot of knives, and runs very fast.
  • Idolizes Cole and Reina and learns the squad’s teleportation regimen as well as they do, nearly well develops a grid sense, and they realize eventually because this literal ball of sunshine has a lot of Shade in her blood (which makes her good at Shadow Walking, which translates well to self-teleportation).
    • Has a very slight layer of fur over her outer arms, legs, center-chest, and cheeks (nearly indistinguishable from her skin unless touched). Purrs like a cat (or a Tartarun). Her eyes glow/reflect in the dark, and she is very drawn to and loved by animals of all kinds.
    • Proclivity towards Light magic, gives herself quite a few temporary “tattoos” with it.
  • Doesn’t talk much about her time in the ASMC, despite being a Class I Hyperion in good standing when she was plucked out and dropped into the Vanguard (which usually stirs up some frustration in people). Doesn’t like being in command, despite having experience and the (previous) rank to manage it; most of her squadmates assume the two things are linked.

Varrin Coffee (AS-09) — Served with Star Squad as the first AS-09 from 1921 E-10 until 1933 E-10, when he transferred branches to join Jel velHart.

  • Successfully retires. Later marries Jel.
  • Formerly an ANIC Corporal. Didn’t see much combat before being absorbed into the Vanguard after one particular mission-gone-wrong the IAF wanted to keep under wraps.
    • Trained as a fighter and freight pilot partially under Asmarin, before she ever become a member of the squad.
  • Is given the role of “coffee runner” when he joins the squad, mostly as a joke, but also because he genuinely knows all the best coffee shops, whether they’re in or outside of Aetheria.
    • He’s also the new youngest when he joins, and the veterans prefer to have their trauma talks while he’s not in the room, at least for a while.
  • Bonds with Talis over the struggle of being transmasculine in Aetheria, and later commiserates with Eryn Stet as well (both of whom are very open about their transness to the squad).
  • Good with grenades and detonators (learns a LOT from Cole about ASMC-grade demolition equipment), but also works well with long-range weapons and a whip-sword.
  • Has a very playful personality that matches him well with Luka, but contrast with the similarities he shares with Lilliana (both have dark senses of humor and drop all funny business in serious situations) and Max (both safety nags with exceptional knowledge of the regs).

Jel velHart (AS-10) — Served as Star Squad’s secondary medic from 1923 E-10 until 1931 E-10, when he transferred to one of the branch management divisions and began advanced schooling for his medical degree.

  • Successfully retires. Later marries Varrin.
    • Becomes a civilian nurse after he retires.
  • Formerly an AHDC medic and support footsoldier; mostly worked on humanitarian projects in Tier 3 (which weren’t always so humane…). Remains part of the Gaelan Region Emergency Medical Brigade even after being absorbed into the Vanguard.
  • Is on and off the team as an extra member at first, but is a permanent member by 1927 (Pycithea). Was trained as a medic, and was brought onto the squad for that reason, but fights very well in melee combat and has good distance aim (enjoys being a ship gunner).
    • Usually trails after Ev, either eyeing them for injuries to direct back to Lilliana and Anaka, or to learn moves from them.
    • Quick-witted, sharp-tongued, and fast to act in the field.
  • He never meets Cassius Varril and would have despised the man, but also likely would’ve agreed with his strategies and the way he ran/taught Ev to run the team. Sympathizes with Varrin and Max’s affection for order and planning, which the rest of their cohort sometimes lacks.
  • Older than Varrin Coffee, barely, and lords it over him because he thinks it’s funny.
